Beach Cleanups Help
Keep It Beachy Clean!
Not only do beach cleanups help keep litter out of our waterways, they also helps us understand sources and types of litter and how they end up on our beaches and in our waterways. If you would like to participate in a beach cleanup, check out our event calendar for a cleanup near you (Virginia).
Are you interested in organizing a cleanup? Please visit the Clean Virginia Waterways website for information on becoming a Site Captain for the Virginia Waterways Cleanup!
Just want to head to your favorite beach and do a solo or family cleanup? Here are a few pointers:
You are going to need a bag (reusable preferred) or bucket, gloves, pick-up tools if needed, plenty of water, sunscreen, and appropriate clothing and footwear.
Use the Clean Swell App on your phone YEAR-ROUND to quickly record data.
If it looks dangerous, i.e. syringe, unexploded ordinance, condom, etc. don’t pick it up. You may want to call your local non-emergency number to report it.
Take photos and post on your social media! tag @keepitbeachyclean so we can share your accomplishments. Hopefully, your photos will inspire others to do a cleanup as well!
